THE HIVE

This urban infill project began as an expansion of an existing Airbnb business. The original scope was to build a new (6) unit building on a vacant plot behind the existing (8) unit building. During the framing stage, a hurricane hit (Florence) and removed the roof from the old building destroying all (8) apartments with flooding rain. As the project evolved into a complete gut renovation of the existing building, the intent developed into a more sophisticated boutique hotel with virtual concierge and cafe. The bones and infrastructure of the old building were updated, (10) new oversized windows were cut into the mass masonry walls and a storefront façade was added to the first floor along Red Cross St showcasing the Lobby/Fitness Center. This project was ripe with drama and excitement as the expanded scope and design development had to be implemented on the fly.
